Confluence enables you to seamlessly import Word documents, effortlessly creating one or more Confluence pages from the content. Want to know more about Confluence? Read our guide What is Confluence? to learn more.

Why import a Word document into Confluence?

  • Keep all your team’s files in one place: Importing Word documents into Confluence allows you to consolidate your organisation's knowledge and documentation into a single, easily accessible platform.

  • Streamline your workflow: Whether you're drafting project plans, writing reports, or creating documentation, having all your content within Confluence simplifies the process.

  • Improve organisation of information: Turn your Word document into information that is easily categorised and searchable. Make use of Confluence's tagging and page linking features to organise content effectively.

How to import a Word document into Confluence

To get started, you’ll need to create a new Confluence page. When you create a new page, it’ll look like this:

Click the Import tab (located to the right of the page) and select Word document.

This will open up your computer files. Find the Word document you want to import, and double click on it.

A progress bar will pop up. Once your import is complete, click Finish to see the contents of your Word document on your Confluence page.

After the upload completes, Confluence will generate pages with the content from your Word document. You can then view and edit these pages as usual. Importantly, there's no ongoing connection between the original Word document and the imported Confluence pages.

Note: It’s also possible to import a Word document into an existing Confluence page - but only if you’re a Data Center user.

Limitations

To prevent memory errors, the uncompressed file size for import is limited to 20 MB. Administrators can adjust this limit using the confluence.word.import.maxsize system property.
